Today I’m sharing the Yin and Yang crochet heart, a meaningful and creative pattern inspired by love, balance, and connection. I designed this heart as part of my Valentine’s Day collection, and it quickly became one of my favorites because it is simple to crochet yet full of symbolism. With its contrasting shapes coming together in harmony, this heart is a beautiful reminder that balance can exist even in the smallest handmade details.

A Meaningful and Easy Crochet Heart for Valentine’s Day

This Yin and Yang crochet heart fits perfectly alongside other Valentine patterns from this collection, creating a thoughtful set of handmade pieces. It pairs beautifully with designs like the Romeo and Juliet mini dolls, the sweet Cupid Amigurumi, and the lovable Chubby Bear. Together, these patterns form a heartfelt group of projects that work wonderfully as gifts or as special keepsakes to celebrate love and creativity.

Materials

Finish size

The finished Yin and Yang crochet heart measures approximately 3,15″ (8 cm) tall. However, the final size may vary depending on your stitch tension and the materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, so feel free to use a hook size that matches your chosen yarn. I always recommend using a slightly smaller hook to keep the stitches tight and prevent the stuffing from showing through. If needed, adjust your hook size for a neater finish.

However, if you’d like to know the gauge for my chosen yarn and materials, here it is:
With sport-weight yarn and a 2mm crochet hook, the gauge for 5 rounds (increasing to 30 stitches) measures approximately 1.6″ (4.5 cm).

Useful Crochet Tutorials

Before we start, I leave a link to all the stitches tutorials I used to complete this pattern. If you are a complete beginner or not familiar with some techniques, there is a blog post with step-by-step images with descriptions, and video tutorials.

Terms and abbreviations (US terms):

Slip stitch (sl): insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, now, pull it through the loop on your needle.

Single crochet (sc): insert the hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop yarn over the needle, you will have two loops on the hook, yarn over the needle, and pull it through the two loops.

Double Crochet (dc): yarn over the needle, insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over the needle, pull through the first two loops of your needle, yarn over the needle, inside all loops on the needle.

Increase (inc): make two single crochet inside the same stitch.

Decrease (dec): Insert the hook into the front loop only of the next two stitches, yarn under, and pull through, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn under and pull through both loops on the hook.

Especial Stitches

Bobble stitch (BO): Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops (like starting a double crochet). Repeat this process five times in the same stitch, so you will have 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Gently tug the stitch to pop the bobble outward.

Yin and Yang Crochet Heart Pattern Instructions

Yin and Yang Crochet Heart Video Tutorial

HEART

With black yarn start,

1 rnd  6sc in a magic ring
2 rnd  6inc Total 12sts
3 rnd  (1sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 18sts
4 rnd  (2sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 24sts
5 rnd  24sc

• Cut the yarn and fasten off.

• With the white yarn, make another one following round 1 to 4.

• Don’t cut the yarn of the second detail.

• Insert the loop of the needle inside one stitch of the black finished detail and continue working in rounds.

ATENTION: The trick here for having a straight line separating the colors is to think of each 24 stitches as a separate detail. Whenever is a white stitch, you crochet with white color, when you arrive in the black stitch, crochet with black color. Always.

The same goes for the decrease. You need to repeat 6 times in each round where 3 will be in black and 3 will be in white.

TIP: pay attention to leaving enough yarn inside the heart when making the color changes. Otherwise, when you stop for stuffing, the strings will be pulling connecting one side to another. Also, go stuffing the heart as you crochet. This will help to have the perfect size of yarn when making the color changes.

6 rnd  48sc (24 from the white detail plus 24 from the black   detail)

13 rnd  (3sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 24sts

14 rnd  24sc

15 rnd  (6sc, 1dec) repeat 3 times Total 21sts

16 rnd  (5sc, 1dec) repeat 3 times Total 18sts

17 rnd  18s

• Finish adding stuffing material.

18 rnd  (1sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times 12sts

19 rnd  12sc

• Cut the yarn, fasten off and hide the remaining inside the heart!

ROUND DOTS

With white yarn start,

1 rnd  6sc in a magic ring. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round.

• Cut the yarn and fasten off. Leave a tail for sewing it.

• Make another one in black.

ASSEMBLY

  1. Use pins to fasten the dots to help you while you are sewing it.
  2. Sew the white dot in the black side 5 rounds distance from the top.
  3. Sew the black dot in the white side, 5 rounds distance from the bottom.
  4. Cut a piece of black yarn and embroider chain stitch to have a better division shape between the black and white sides.
