If you love quick makes and magical little projects, this free crochet unicorn keychain pattern is such a joy to work on. It’s small, beginner-friendly, and perfect for adding a spark of color to backpacks, keys, or gift bags. I designed it thinking of kids and teens who adore unicorns, but honestly… I think we all need a tiny bit of unicorn magic with us during the day.

Materials:

Finished Size

The finished amigurumi Unicorn crochet keychain pattern measures approximately 3″ (7.5 cm) tall. However, the final size may vary depending on your stitch tension and the materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, so feel free to use a hook size that matches your chosen yarn. I always recommend using a slightly smaller hook to keep the stitches tight and prevent the stuffing from showing through. If needed, adjust your hook size for a neater finish.

However, if you’d like to know the gauge for my chosen yarn and materials, here it is:
With sport-weight yarn and a 2mm crochet hook, the gauge for 5 rounds (increasing to 30 stitches) measures approximately 1.6″ (4.5 cm).

Useful Crochet Tutorials

Before we start, I leave a link to all the stitches tutorials I used to complete this pattern. If you are a complete beginner or not familiar with some techniques, there is a blog post with step-by-step images with descriptions, and video tutorials.

Terms and abbreviations (US terms):

Slip stitch (sl): insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, now, pull it through the loop on your needle.

Single crochet (sc): insert the hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop yarn over the needle, you will have two loops on the hook, yarn over the needle, and pull it through the two loops.

Increase (inc): make two single crochet inside the same stitch.

Decrease (dec): Insert the hook into the front loop only of the next two stitches, yarn under, and pull through, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn under and pull through both loops on the hook.

Unicorn Pattern Instructions

Head

With light pink yarn start,

2 rnd                      6inc Total 12sts

3 rnd                      (1sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 18sts

4 rnd                      (2sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 24sts

5 rnd                      24sc

  • Between rounds 6 to 12, we will create the muzzle. This will be facing front when you start assembling with the legs later.

6 rnd                      9sc, (1sc, 1inc) repeat 3 times, 9sc Total 27sts

7 rnd                      9sc, (2sc, 1inc) repeat 3 times, 9sc Total 30sts

8-10 rnd               30sc

11 rnd                   9sc, (2sc, 1dec) repeat 3 times, 9sc Total 27sts

12 rnd                   9sc, (1sc, 1dec) repeat 3 times, 9sc Total 24sts

13 rnd                   (2sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 18sts

  • Stop here to add stuffing material before continuing,

14 rnd                   (1sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 12sts

15 rnd                   12blsl

Body

  • For the next round, you’ll work into the remaining front loops from round 14. This will make round 15 to face inside of the toy.
  • This creates a clean, sharp division between the head and the body.

16 rnd                   FL12inc Total 24sts

17 rnd                   (1sc, 1inc) repeat 12 times Total 36sts

18-22 rnd             36sc

23 rnd                   (1sc, 1dec) repeat 12 times Total 24sts

24 rnd                   (2sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 18sts

  • Stop here to add stuffing material before continuing,

25 rnd                   (1sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 12sts

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off. Weave the tail through the front loops of all 12 stitches and pull tight to close the circle.
  • Hide the remaining yarn tail inside the unicorn.

Legs

With same color as the body start,

1 rnd                      8sc in a magic ring

2-3 rnd                  8sc

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off using the invisible finish. Make four.
  • For the fourth one, cut the yarn and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. You’ll use this long tail to sew all four legs onto the body.

Ears

With the same color as the body start,

1 rnd                      3sc in a magic ring

2 rnd                      3inc Total 6sts

3 rnd                      6sc

  • Fold the ear in half. You should now have 3 stitches on each side.

4 rnd                      3 sc, crocheting the sides together to close the ear.

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing later.
  • Make two.

Horn

With light yellow yarn start,

1 rnd                      3sc in a magic ring

  • From here on, work on the back loop of the stitches.

2 rnd                      BL3inc Total 6sts

3-4 rnd                  6blsc

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing later.

Colar

With a contrast color (I am using a light green), chain 26. Skip the first chain and start,

1 row     10sl, 1sc, 1hdc, 3dc in the same chain, 1hdc, 1sc, 10sl

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing later.

Assembly

  1. Sew the legs to the body. Make sure the two front legs line up with the unicorn’s muzzle so everything stays nicely centered.
  2. Sew the ears between rounds 3 and 5, leaving about 8–10 stitches of space between them.
  3. Sew the horn in the center of the forehead, placing it between rounds 2 and 3.

Mane

Attach the yarn to the center back of the head, around round 9.

Work surface single crochet up the back of the head, making about 10 sc in total (or simply stop once you reach the horn).

Chain 1, turn, and work (2 sc in the first stitch, 3 sc in the next stitch). Repeat () all the way across.

Chain 1, turn, and now work (1 sc, 1 inc) to the end.

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Don’t worry about stitch counts here — the goal is to create a naturally curly, hyperbolic shape for the mane.

Tail

With the same color as the mane, chain 6. Skip the first chain and start,

1 row     1sl, 1sc, 1hdc, 2dc in same, 1hdc

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing later.

Final Details

  1. Sew the tail to the back of the unicorn between rounds 18 and 19.
  2. Using black thread, embroider the eyes on round 5 of the head, leaving 3 stitches between them.
  3. With the same thread, embroider a small mouth in the center of round 8.
  4. Using a bit of white thread, embroider two small lines on the outside of each eye.
  5. Sew the collar around the neck.
  6. Attach the keychain to round 1 of the head.
