The ad-free PDF includes two versions: one with detailed instructions and step-by-step photos, and another print-friendly text-only.
Materials:
- 4mm and 2mm crochet hooks,
- Merino wool worsted-weight yarn (#4) in any color you want your baby seal to be, and white for the nose.
- Pink and black sports-weight yarn. To embroider the snout and to crochet the headband.
- Sewing needle,
- Stuffing material hypoallergenic polyester,
- Scissors
Finished Size
The finished baby seal snuggler measures approximately 10″ (26 cm) tall. However, the final size may vary depending on your stitch tension and the materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, so feel free to use a hook size that matches your chosen yarn. I always recommend using a slightly smaller hook to keep the stitches tight and prevent the stuffing from showing through. If needed, adjust your hook size for a neater finish.
However, if you’d like to know the gauge for my chosen yarn and materials, here it is:
With super worsted-weight merino wool yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook, the gauge for 4 rounds (increasing to 24 stitches) measures approximately 2.5″ (5 cm).

Before we start, I leave a link to all the stitches tutorials I used to complete this pattern. If you are a complete beginner or not familiar with some techniques, there is a blog post with step-by-step images with descriptions, and video tutorials.

- In the next round, you will crochet together with the upper flippers.
- If your starting stitch is in a different position than mine, the flippers may not end up symmetrical when following this pattern. If that happens, locate the 6 dc in the center of the body and mark them with stitch markers. This section (6 dc) should be the distance between one flipper and the other. Adjust round 21 accordingly.

- Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Finishing
- Fold the piece in half so that the right side are touching on the inside and the wrong sides are facing out.
- Fold the left side downwards to form a C shape. Then fold the right side upwards to form a reverse C.
- Insert the upper layer of the left fold between the center fold of the right side. Then insert the lower layer of the right fold between the center fold of the left side, so that the two “C” shapes interlock with each other.
- Using a tapestry needle, seam all four layers together, making sure to go through every layer with a back-and-forth motion.
- Weave in the ends and trim any excess yarn.
Final Details
- Sew the 18 stitches of the body to the 18 stitches from round 17 of the head.
- Sew the snout between rounds 11 and 14 of the face.
- Using a piece of black sport-weight yarn, embroider a triangle on the snout and fill it with straight lines until fully covered. With the same yarn, embroider a small mouth below it (see images 22 and 23 for reference).
- Embroider closed eyes in round 10 of the head (one round above the snout), leaving 5 stitches between them.
- Place the headband on the seal’s head.
