Materials:
- 2mm crochet hook
- Dark gray, purple and light gray yarn. I used 100% cotton, light worsted, 6ply.
- Black yarn for the eyes.
- Stuffing material
- Scissors
- Sewing needle.
- Or, you can use safety eyes! The position is at the end of this post.
Finish size:
The finished Black Cat Amigurumi measures approximately 2,6″ (7 cm) tall. However, the final size may vary depending on your stitch tension and the materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, so feel free to use a hook size that matches your chosen yarn. I always recommend using a slightly smaller hook to keep the stitches tight and prevent the stuffing from showing through. If needed, adjust your hook size for a neater finish.
However, if you’d like to know the gauge for my chosen yarn and materials, here it is:
With sport-weight yarn and a 2mm crochet hook, the gauge for 5 rounds (increasing to 30 stitches) measures approximately 1.6″ (4.5 cm).
Useful Crochet Tutorials
Before we start, I leave a link to all the stitches tutorials I used to complete this pattern. If you are a complete beginner or not familiar with some techniques, there is a blog post with step-by-step images with descriptions, and video tutorials.
Terms and abbreviations (US terms):
Single crochet (sc): insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop yarn over the needle, you will have two loops on the hook, yarn over the needle, and pull it through the two loops.

- Sew the eyes between rounds 6 and 9, leaving 1 stitch between them. Using white thread, embroider two small lines on the upper left corner of the black part of the eye and one line on the lower left corner (see minute 37:56 of the video).
- With light gray yarn, embroider three lines on each cheek, leaving 1 round of space between them. The middle line should be straight, while the first and last lines should be slightly angled, one round higher.
- Using the same yarn, embroider the snout as a small triangle in the center of the face, one round below the eyes.
- Finally, sew the tail to the center back of the cat, between rounds 10 and 11.

FAQ for the Crochet Black Cat
If you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches and making amigurumi pieces, you’ll enjoy this pattern. There are a lot of video tutorials to help guide you along! And the tricky part might actually be the surface chain stitch embroidery rather than the crochet itself!
Yes, you can adjust the hook size, just remember that using a larger hook might make your stitches looser and the cat bigger. Remember to adapt the yarn weight to the chosen needle. Which usually leads to the next question
Definitely! You can use any yarn you like. Just keep in mind that changing yarn type and size will affect the final size and texture of your Black Cat.
