Before we start, I leave a link to all the stitches tutorial I used to complete this pattern. If you are a complete beginner or not familiar with some technique, there is a blog post with step-by-step images with descriptions and video tutorials.

Baby Elephant free amigurumi pattern
Materials:
- 8mm crochet hook
- Chenille yarn of your preference. For this baby elephant, I used the brand Alize Velluto. Similar yarn weight and texture suggestion can be Universal Yarn and Creative World crafts.
- Black sports weight for the eyes.
- Stuffing material
- Scissors
- Sewing needle.
- Or, you can use safety eyes! The position is at the end of this post.
Finish size: 12cm or 5 inches with the ears.

Terms and abbreviations (US terms):
Single crochet (sc): insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop yarn over the needle, you will have two loops on the hook, yarn over the needle and pull it through the two loops.
Increase (inc): make two single crochet inside the same stitch.
Decrease (dec): Insert hook into front loop only of next two stitches, yarn under, pull through, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn under and pull through both loops on the hook.
Front loop (FL): Insert hook into the front loop only of the stitch, and continue with the stitch written in front of the abbreviation FL.
Bobble stitch (BO): Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through the first 2 loops (you’ll have 2 loops on the hook.) Repeat 5 times and you will have 6 loops on your hook, yarn over one last time and pull inside all loops on the needle.
HEAD and BODY
With color of your choice start,
1 rnd 6sc in a magic ring
2 rnd 6inc Total 12sts
3 rnd (1sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 18sts
4 rnd (2sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 24sts
5 to 7 rnd 24sc
8 rnd 12dec Total 12sts
• For the next round, you will work all stitches on the Front Loop only. From round 10 on, go back to working normally.
9 rnd FL(3sc, 1BO, 4sc, 1BO, 3sc)
10 rnd (1sc, 1inc) repeat 6 times Total 18sts
• Stop here to start adding stuffing material before continuing,
11 rnd chain4, skip first chain, 3sl, 6sc, (1FLBO, 5sc) repeat 2 times
12 rnd (1sc, 1dec) repeat 6 times Total 12sts
• Finish adding stuffing material.
• Cut the yarn, fasten it off and hide the remaining tail inside the toy.

EARS
• Right ear:
With the same color start, work in rows
1 row 4sc in a magic ring, chain 1 turn
2 row 4inc, chain 1, turn Total 8sts
3 row (1sc, 1inc) repeat 3 times, 1dc, 1inc dc Total 12sts
• Chain 2, join with a sl in the last st where you made the dc increase.
• Cut the yarn, fasten it off and leave a tail for sewing it.
• Make another one following the same instructions
• Left ear:
With the same color start,
1 row 4sc in a magic ring, chain 1 turn
2 row 4inc, chain 1, turn Total 8sts
3 row chain 2, 1inc dc, 1dc, (1inc, 1sc) repeat 3 times
• Cut the yarn, fasten it off and leave a tail for sewing it.
• Make another one following the same instructions
TRUNK
With the same color start,
1 rnd 4sc in a magic ring
2 to 4 rnd 4sc
5 rnd 4inc Total 8sts
6 rnd 4sc crocheting the sides together, closing the trunk
• Cut the yarn, fasten it off and leave a tail for sewing it.
ASSEMBLY
- Sew the trunk between rounds 5 and 6.
- Sew the ears between rounds 2 and 3, and continue downwards for 3 rounds. Stop sewing once you reach the middle of the ear.
- Embroider the eyes in round 5, leaving 4 stitches between them. Embroider the eyebrows one round above the eyes and one stitch to the side with the same yarn.
- Optional: Cut 6 pieces of yarn with a 10cm/4 inch length. Attach them to the top of the elephant’s head. Cut the edges leveling up to be the same size.

I enjoyed making this quick little elephant. It seems like it was possibly missing a row 13 of six decreases? Did you mean to close up the bottom of the elephant from 12 stitches? In any case, I added a row 13 of six decreases. Thanks for the free pattern.

Hey Catharine! I like to finish my amigurumi always with 12 stitches. I think it looks nicer and more neat. I did a tutorial only talking about that, it's called fastening off in amigurumi toys and is available on YouTube if you want to hear more about it. But I honestly think is a matter of preference! If that works well for you, that's perfect! Thank you for the kind words about my pattern!
